Features of Cognitive Principle Therapy

- This is a psycho-educational therapy with a high degree of teaching of how to change by creating new habits which is significantly faster than changing old habits.
- Gives constant feedback in the form of advice on what’s wrong and how to change, without specifically telling you what to do.
- Explains the anger cycle using CPT which emphasizes reducing negative thinking about being respected while increasing respect within.

With explosive anger the person normally has an impulsive personality and has learned the habit of by passing all the steps and goes straight to abuse.
One characteristic of an impulsive person is that they quickly return to normal and expect the person who is receiving the abuse to also get over it quickly.
An Additional technique is used to help those with impulsivity and explosive anger.
Teaching component in CPT relates to the following five areas:
- Learning how to create a new habit (sub-conscious) which overcomes anger.
- Ensuring that the client acts responsibly and does not try to exercise control without responsibility.
- Ensuring the client concentrates on their area of influence not their area of concern.
- Learning the difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness.
- Teaching how principles (trust, courage, respect, self-control, etc) develop character and lead to positive outcomes.
CASE STUDY: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BY 40+ YEAR OLD FEMALE
Last month I received a call from a woman, “Jenny” stating that she wasn’t accepted into an anger management course, but she was not told why. I offered her my 4 session anger management course.
Six months ago she had her 15 year old son removed from her care due to a domestic violence incident against him. She was very aggressive in her attitude towards the Department of Human Services [DHS] for removing her son. The woman “Jenny” had long history of both receiving and giving abuse. She was taken away from her own mother by DHS at aged 13 and placed in foster care for twelve months where she sexually abused during that year. She was then placed with a relative who also sexually abused her. She had a long history or being a bully at school and being involved in physical disputes up to the age of 35. At our first session she was anxious that her son was in residential care and he was not been properly cared for and DHS were not answering her questions.
My anger management course is very directive and mainly psycho-educational, teaching the following:

Jenny responded very positively to the teachings and it was like she had never been taught these basic things before. She also did her homework and practiced the three techniques I taught her to reduce her anger.
Today I received a letter from her Specialist Family Violence Support worker who stated,
